Virtual Math Girl

Mathematics topics explored include four quadrant grids, coordinate planes, the distance formula for calculating distance on a grid, equivalent fractions, decimals, percentages, common denominators in addition and subtraction of fractions, improper fractions and mixed numbers.

The student videos introduce the mathematics academic content standards and underlying ideas in practical applications of the concepts specifically for 5th grade students.

The Teacher’s Edition videos provide instructions for presenting the mathematical concepts, activities, assessments, and recommended topics for further discussion with the students. Printable activity sheets and printable assessments are available for the Teacher’s Edition of each video.

Working with Coordinate Planes

The purpose of Virtual Math Girl Module 1 (Student) and 2 (Teacher) is to familiarize students with the four quadrant grid, or coordinate plane. A discussion of the distance formula for calculating length on a grid is included as an activity for extended learning.

Student Video- 4:32 min.
Virtual Math Girl guides a student through understanding graphs by introducing single quadrant grids and four quadrant grids, plotting ordered pairs and calculating distance.

Teacher Video - 6:25 min.
The instructor in this teacher-centered video outlines directions for presenting the unit to students and makes suggestions for further reinforcement activities. Information given includes identifying ordered pairs, graphing ordered pairs, and calculating distances using the Distance Formula.
