Got Science!

Each of the Got Science! content standards is explored on two levels. Each video serves as a point of departure. The student videos introduce the Physical Science academic content standard and underlying concepts in an engaging manner designed specifically for 9th grade students. The instructor development videos examine the academic content standards in greater detail, and provide instructions for in-class demonstrations, and recommended topics for further discussion with the students.

Exothermic and Endothermic Reactions

Illustrate that chemical reactions are either endothermic or exothermic (e.g., cold packs, hot packs and the burning of fossil fuels).

Student Video - 4:22 min.
This video demonstrates the differences between exothermic and endothermic chemical reactions. Using a self-heating camping meal (exothermic) and a beaker that becomes frozen to wood (endothermic), the video introduces the key characteristics of exothermic and endothermic reactions.

Teacher Video - 4:03 min.
How do you demonstrate exothermic and endothermic reactions in your classroom The Got Science instructor demonstrates, step by step, an exothermic reaction using a Heat a Meal© package, used most commonly for camping. The endothermic reaction is demonstrated by using a simple chemical reaction that freezes a beaker to a wooden board.
