Got Science!

 
Each of the Got Science! content standards is explored on two levels. Each video serves as a point of departure. The student videos introduce the Physical Science academic content standard and underlying concepts in an engaging manner designed specifically for 9th grade students. The instructor development videos examine the academic content standards in greater detail, and provide instructions for in-class demonstrations, and recommended topics for further discussion with the students.

Newton's First Law of Motion


Explain the movement of objects by applying Newton's three laws of motion. Demonstrate that any object does not accelerate (remains at rest or maintains a constant speed and direction of motion) unless an unbalanced (net) force acts on it. Demonstrate the ways in which frictional forces constrain the motion of objects (e.g., a car traveling around a curve, a block on an inclined plane, a person running, an airplane in flight).

Videotaped at an ice arena, this video explains and demonstrates Newton's first law of motion with the help of several hockey players. An additional example of Newton's first law of motion is demonstrated by the use of a scientific perpetual motion air track.

Teacher Video - 5:06 min.
Using an air hockey table and a scientific perpetual motion air track, this Got Science video segment provides additional insight, procedures, and tips for in-class demonstration(s), and recommended topics for further discussion.
