Marcia Adams: Change of Heart

Marcia Adams

"I never doubted that I would survive," explains
popular PBS how-to host and author Marcia Adams.
"I feel that I have lasted so long for a reason. I have
so much to do yet, so the fear of death and not
surviving - which is a great reality in heart
transplants - never once occurred to me."

Marcia Adams: Change Of Heart, a WBGU-PBS documentary, details not only Marcia's fight with conjunctive heart disease, but profiles several other women who have been diagnosed with heart-related illnesses.

With a quiet honesty, Marcia talks about the stress of being on a heart transplant waiting list for over a year. The camera goes inside the operating room where transplant surgeons remove Marcia's badly diseased heart, replacing it with the heart of a 59-year-old donor.

Finally, Marcia talks about her recovery and recuperation. Marcia is determined to prevent other women from undergoing a life-threatening battle with heart disease.

Last year, more women died from heart-related
illnesses than from all cancers combined.
Many of these deaths could have been avoided if women had understood the risks. Spreading this information is now Marcia's new challenge.

"With these goals, I'm going on," she says. "I can't imagine living without goals. It would be like living clueless. From that point of view, perhaps what happened to me was a marvelous plus. If I can help save women's lives, then that truly is a contribution."
